Batting was the weakness

The pitch in Tendring was a classic batting track, but our players turned conventional wisdom on its head by bowling superbly and batting woefully.

Tyrrell – Kept wicket to a very high standard. In fact, probably the best all round keeping display ever from the big man. His batting looked rock solid and elegant until the moment that the ball hit the stumps. One cover drive for 4 was undoubtedly shot of the day.

Mi. Freeman – Took a nice catch, ground fielded very well and kept making positive noises even during the early onslaught. Didn’t excel with the bat, but just needs a bit of confidence to get back in the runs.

Leigh – Looked extremely sharp in the field and set a super example in attacking ground fielding. Occupied the crease with an immaculate forward defensive shot and just as he looked set for a big score played all round a straight one.

Alfieri – This was another top innings even though the runs didn’t flow as easily as the previous week. Defended his stumps well against a lively attack and played some good looking offensive strokes. Another good score is likely to follow soon.

M. Cox – Made one particular excellent diving stop in the field and as usual looked the club’s most athletic fielder. Got thrown in at the deep end for his seasonal reappearance with the bat, but there will be other weeks.

Jones – Combined with Mr Bell for a stunning run out, but his batting was a massive let down after last years heroic 50 on debut. This will only be a blip and Adam’s class will show through in the very near future.

Downing – Dusted off the seasonal bowling cobwebs and snaffled his first wicket of 2009. Looked comfortable while batting again and played some nice shots before being caught by a diving youngster. Also took two catches for the defence of the Golden Fielder trophy.

Sindrey – His opening spell was only average, but his second spell had a lot more and added another wicket to his seasonal haul. Pouched a routine catch, and the least said about his batting the better.

Ni. Shewring – Bowled very well on a track with not much for the spinners and ended up with another 3 fer. But his best work came with the bat when his team really needed it. Showed no fear and batted well for a gutsy 28 to restore pride after a massive team collapse. A great all round display.

Ma. Freeman – Bowled a straight 10 overs in the Essex coastal sunshine and richly deserved the brace of wickets that he went home with. Also took two superb catches to take an outright lead in the golden fielder. Didn’t get long enough with the bat, but returned home unbeaten. Another top all round performance.

Shuttlewood – Captained very well and kept his player’s happy while trying to achieve victory. Bowled superbly and by taking the pace off the ball blew the Tendring batting wide open. Could have easily had 4 wickets with a tiny bit more luck.
