Letter to Rosaneri CC

Sir,

In response to your article dated 23rd March 2007 about 20/20 songs to walk out to bat to. I must point out a number of factual errors and highlight the general falling standards of journalism on www.rosanericricket.co.uk , your one stop shop for all things pink and summery.

Firstly, I’m the one charging out of the trenches and open the batting at the top of the order, rather than hide and come in at no.3 once the heavy artillery has been and gone. One can only assume that the scribe of the piece, one Nick Shewring, must be having a nap at the start of the Rosaneri innings due to his lightning fast and energetic fielding exertions. Or perhaps he went for wee and missed the first over.

Secondly, I would go against the subliminal theme of the piece and suggest not picking a gung-ho egotistical piece of melody such as Tina Turners 'Simply the Best'. I have discounted this piece for the following reasons,

a) Describing yourself as the best will wind up the bowler;
b) You can’t bat in jodhpurs ala Eubank although you might get a few leg byes off the flappy bits;
c) A Eubank style walk to the crease would take 10 minutes to get to the middle as you stop every few paces to pose and bang your gloves;
d) There’s no leopard print leg pads on Ebay - believe me I’ve looked;

and

e) It’s a rank bad tune.

I would choose a piece that’s personal to you and enables you to relax and focus on the impending job to do. A fine example of this working well was Robsie and his The Godfather theme tune that precluded a fine knock of 20 in the Cotswolds against Scolesy and his cheating mob.

Jack Russell, the eccentric former English wicketkeeper, always walked out to 'How much is that doggie in the window?'. Perhaps Fairman could walk out to 'Private Dancer?'.

For me though, it has to be a piece of up tempo rock to get the pulse rate above almost dormant, with Supergrass's 'Richard III'.

Just hope the innings lasts longer than the song.

Yours sincerely,
Rosaneri’s number 1. (John Shuttlewood)

Turner does not feature on Pits ipod
Eubankcould easily become the first batsman for many a year to be timed out
