Mat enjoyed a very good season and got through an amazing 94 overs, and in the process he only gave away 315 runs. Surprisingly though he failed to pick up the large numbers of wickets that his bowling undoubtedly deserved.
His best spell without doubt came against a very strong Hoddesdon team where he ripped through the middle and lower order to return a sensational 4 for 37.
Giving the captain control has always been Mat’s mission statement, and he is reliable as a Swiss watch in delivering. When Mat bowls the opposition usually shut up shop and just try to see him off, which obviously does not help his wickets tally.
Mat’s batting is often relied on by the team to get us out of a hole, and again in 2008 he came up with the goods. A particularly good knock came against North Weald when he rescued the pinks by supporting Adam Jones in the first instance, and then when the ship was steadied he kicked on to help put a good total on the board.
Averaging 21 over the course of a tough campaign against strong opposition was a grand effort, and a maiden 50 must be the target with the bat for next year.
Overall then a top season from a now established genuine all rounder.
