Top work all round

Graham Tyrrell – Produced the best display of attacking wicket keeping that the club has ever seen. He may have let a few byes through on a difficult pitch, but his wicket taking contribution was sensational. Three catches and one stumping speak for themselves. Then went on to open the batting against a hostile attack and although only scoring 8 runs, he occupied the crease for a long time and didn’t walk back to the hutch until the team had accumulated 50+.

B.Underwood – Bravely took on the quicks on a beast of a pitch and has the bruises to prove it. Will have learnt loads from the experience and can relive his boundary shot for a long time to come.

Alfieri – Worked hard at the crease and ground out a priceless 11 runs. Eventually snicked one to the keeper, but this will go down as a landmark innings as the conditions made this batting at its most difficult.

M.Cox – Another who contributed a gutsy 11. Looked brave and composed throughout against accurate and fast bowling on a minefield of a pitch.

Downing – Surprisingly didn’t get used as a bowler until the last knockings, but took a wicket with his first ball. Looked settled while batting in the difficult conditions, but then got bowled by a freak ball that was credited to the pitch rather than the bowler ! Ironic really as it was his own Council Department that should have ensured the pitch was better.

A.Underwood – Captained with the minimum of fuss, but the maximum of efficiency. Ruthless when he needed to be, but caring when appropriate. Got 10 runs in 2 balls and got undone by a cleverly disguised quicker ball from a good spinner. Also took 2 nice catches.

Freeman – After a poor first over he got on the money and never looked back to return outstanding economical figures. Did his job by removing one of the openers, but will probably be disappointed not to bag more on a pace bowlers dream pitch. Batting was uncharacteristically off form as he lobbed a simple catch to a grateful fielder.

Rose – Bowled a lovely spell and got the pitch to do its worst by consistently placing the ball in front of the stumps. Got his reward by picking up a deserved brace. Batted with reserve and aggression and played one particular over to perfection by defending 5 good balls and then smashing the bad one for six.

N.Shewring – Returned career best figures with the ball by picking up 3 for 19. Bowled beautifully from the very first ball and attacked hard on a favourable pitch. Added a vital 9 with the bat as well in an all round top performance.

S.Underwood – Again bowled a tight line with immense accuracy and took 2 wickets in back to back balls. But his most important work was to follow with the bat. Went in at 10 with the pressure dial cranked to max. Stayed firm and guided the Pinks to victory.

S.Shewring – His day started poorly with a dreadful opening over, but bounced back to become a cult hero. Once the bowling warmed up he dislodged an opener and kept the runs to a minimum. But the batting was the real show stopping performance. The pressure was massive, but to come in a whack 6’s and 4’s as though he was in a meaningless net was something special to behold. A brilliant performance on a difficult pitch in a powder keg situation.
