The club received an interesting email this week that is worthy of further debate online.
The email came from The Northampton Exiles Fixture Secretary, and to be frank was quite a shock to Nick, Pits, and myself as we discussed over a polite cup of tea in the Civic Centre canteen.
Basically Northampton Exiles have taken the radical decision to do away with traditional Sunday fixtures and replace them with a blanket policy of Twenty/20 matches only. They had offered us a fixture as part of this revolutionary approach, but at present we have politely declined.
The Rosaneri Think Tank discussed the merits and drawbacks and concluded that Twenty/20 would be considered a waste of a cricketing weekend. However, Nick did point out that any cricket was better than no cricket. He then went on to try and talk myself and Pits into playing a cheeky 5 over match in our lunch break on Friday down by the “Goods In” area.
Northampton Exiles explain this radical decision on a lack of availability for traditional Sunday fixtures and their members wanted to experiment with a short but sweet version of the proper game. Their decision is probably unique in the whole of Great Britain, and is certainly bold for a traditional cricket club. They may well be years ahead of their time, but there is also a chance that they have sold their soul to the Devil.
