What makes a big club ?
Is it money ? Is it trophies ? Is it attendance figures ? Is it world wide fan base ?
The debate has raged for many years and will continue to do so for ever more without a definitive answer ever being achieved. But one thing for sure is that a big club are expected to behave in a certain fashion.
With last week’s fiasco at Tottenham fresh in the memory, it has without doubt for me confirmed that Spurs are clearly not a big club. Even the most passionate Spurs fans must be appalled at their club’s behaviour.
Common decency and integrity are fundamentals in being considered as a big club. The shenanigans at White Hart Lane would never have occurred in the marble halls of Highbury or the walnut clad board room at Glasgow Rangers. The dignity of a truly big club prevents such shocking behaviour.
But you may be thinking, “What has all this got to do with cricket ?”
Well the link is simple, it is a lesson for us all to learn as we continue on our cricketing adventure that the mistakes of Tottenham must not be repeated in our quest to become a “Big cricket club”.
We may not have any money, we may not have any trophies, we do not have many supporters, and we certainly do not have a world wide fan base. But we do have common decency and integrity, so we are in fact one step closer to being considered a big club than Spurs are.
