Disappointment......by Andy Underwood

Disappointment, shock, fiasco, farce, sham, debacle, embarrassment, and anger are just some of the words associated with the unbelievable decision to call off Saturday’s end to the 2007 season.

The decision to cancel the match was apparently taken at 9am by the Walthamstow groundsman. What ground was he inspecting ? Lords ? Surely with this being the last game of the season, the state of the pitch at the end of play was irrelevant. Surely his club chairman would have preferred a game to be played, which would have put money behind the bar. Yes, it had rained the day before. But did he not consider the forecast ?

By 10 o’clock the sun was shining and it remained dry for the whole day. Perhaps we could have started an hour later to allow the pitch to dry more and reduce the game to 35 overs per side. As it turned out, Saturday was a lovely autumnal day, and it would have been a beautiful way to end a fantastic season. Instead, we are all left feeling cheated.

I am demanding that club officials launch a full enquiry to determine the exact circumstances into how this debacle was allowed to happen. This groundsman is playing with people’s lives. How many players from both sides had their days ruined unnecessarily ? Is this groundsman related to the Winchmore School caretaker ? Why did he press the panic button so early ? Hopefully a full enquiry will answer these questions.

If this type of spirit had been displayed by our forefathers during the Second World War we would all be part of a massive German Empire right now and cricket probably wouldn’t even exist !

This bumbling fool must be brought to task.
