Visit to bat workshop

I recently purchased a new bat from Warsop Stebbings and the experience can only be described as both magical and beautiful.

From the moment I walked into the hidden away workshop within the heart of East Hanningfield, Essex, I knew I had happened upon an Aladdin's cave of cricketing paraphernalia.

The bats were stacked up like vintage bottles of wine in a vintners cellar, and the choice was immense.

Once I had selected my ideal weight and shape of bat (all made from highest grade English willow) and practiced a few cover drives and forward defensives I made my way to the till.

Sat on the corner of the work surface like a scene from open all hours, a majestic old English till register transacted my business - an extremely reasonable £96.00 for a fine example of English craftsmanship.

Then came the proverbial icing on the cake - I was offered a complimentary second grip. I asked, with eager anticipation, if they had any pink grips? Yes was the reply, but not only did they have pick grips, they had a choice of 6 shades of pink!

I was then offered a complimentary bat cover - and to finish the team colours off nicely, I chose a black one.

It was such a moving experience that I have relayed the story on to a number of club players, and many have shown an interest in visiting the Warsop Stebbings workshop.

I have today spoken with Warsops and they would gladly conduct a tour of their workshop and provide a talk on bat making for our club. Places would need to be limited to approx 6/7. However, if there is more interest we can arrange a second visit.

Dates are to be agreed and will be finalised when numbers are known, but it will be in October/November and will be on a Saturday morning.

Please e-mail the club on admin@rosanericricket.co.uk if you would be interested in a visit to the workshop (this is totally free and will cost the club and players nothing to attend).

Below is some information on Warsop Stebbings -

The Warsops have been making cricket bats since being founded in 1870. Keeping the family traditions, skills and secrets handed down through the generations has helped us to produce the highest quality bats which still proudly bear the name today. The 'Warsop' hand made bat is revered, by professionals and amateurs alike, as one of the most responsive bats around in the modern day.

We are situated in the heart of Essex which is, of course still the main source of timber for bats around the world today. The local suppliers provide us with the finest material each season, selected with an expert eye. With over ¼ of a million bats worth of experience behind us, we pride ourselves on producing a quality product every time.
