Cricket questions

If a bowler comes on to bowl for the first time in an innings and with his first delivery bowls a wide to end the match (e.g. winning run or stumping for the final wicket), how would his figures be written down given that he hasn't actually bowled a ball?

As 0-0-1-0 (1 wide).

Am I right in thinking you don't mark a wide against the batsman as a ball received?

Wides do not count as balls received because batsmen cannot score from them and their addition would distort the tally of deliveries by which individual innings are measured. Their inclusion would also allow bowlers with hidden agendas deliberately to elongate a batsman's innings.

In a world cup match, the scores were level and the batsman hit a boundary but the final score only went up by one run. Does a four or one go on the players' stats?

A recent revision to Law 21, section 6 (Winning Hit or Extras), decrees that only if a boundary is scored before the batsmen have completed sufficient runs to win the match will the whole of the boundary allowance be credited to the side's total and, in the case of a hit by the bat, to the striker's score.

In the example you saw, just one run was added to the total and individual score because the winning run was scored before the ball reached the boundary.

In Test match cricket, what is the surname of the only cricketer, from any Test match playing country to have scored 3,000 runs without ever having scored a century?

The name you need is Warne. Shane Warne scored 3142 runs in 197 innings during his 144 international Tests. The highest of his 12 fifties was 99 against New Zealand at Perth in 2001-02. He also collected 34 ducks, a tally exceeded only by Courtney Walsh who made 43.

Was there any occasion in a Test match between England and Australia when Lillee was caught in the gully by Willey off Dilley?

Yes, at the WACA in Perth at 4.08pm on 18 December 1979, the fourth day of the Anglo-Australian Test. Dennis Lillee had scored 19 off his previous 104 balls in 135 minutes when he fended a short delivery from Graham Dilley to Peter Willey at close gully.

Earlier in this match Lillee had caused a ten-minute stoppage by using a bat made of aluminium.

Which bowler has the highest number of caught and bowleds at Test level?

Anil Kumble has the most with 27 of his 547 wickets taken to catches off his own bowling (4.9%) in international Tests.

Of the three other bowlers who have taken 20 or more caught and bowleds, Underwood, with 20 of his 297 wickets, has taken the highest percentage of his wickets in this way (6.7). The other two bowlers are Muthiah Muralitharan with 25 out of 669 (3.7%) and Shane Warne with 21 out of 702 (2.9%).

What or who is I Zingari?

Founded by a group of Old Harrovians at a dinner party in July 1845, three years before W.G.Grace was born, I Zingari is the oldest of all wandering clubs. The name is Italian for 'the gypsies'.

Also known as 'IZ', the club was formed to foster the spirit of amateur cricket. Its colours are black, red and gold, symbolizing its motto 'out of darkness, through fire, into light.'
