Down memory lane

It is that time of year when you look back at the year on its way out and look forward to the one on its way in.

So here are my thoughts and memories of the 2009 season.

Best innings: Adam Jones fifty against St Margaretsbury – This innings was pure class at a time when Rosaneri needed it most.

Best bowling spell: Graham Sparrey when he wreaked havoc at Holtwhites Trinibis and claimed 4 wickets for virtually no runs on a pitch where you could lean over and touch one of the boundaries from the middle. Honorable mention must go to Paul Sindrey here for his brilliant demonstration of aggressive fast bowling against Edmonton that nearly pulled off a famous victory from the jaws of a thrashing.

Best shot: Sheridan Leigh’s straight six against Dunmow in what turned out to be a match winning knock. Elegance, confidence and power combined to perfection.

Best ball: For this I am going to name two balls of equal quality. Firstly Mat Freeman’s Yorker at Botany Bay to dismiss the danger man Richardson for a Golden, and secondly Stephen Underwood’s comeback delivery which rattled the stumps against Angus of Lindsell after being smashed for an almighty six for the first ball he faced.

Best game: The nail biting draw against North Weald when Mat Freeman marshalled the tail to secure the positive result.

Worst game: The farcical draw against Lindsell when our opening batsmen took it upon himself to play for the draw against the dressing rooms wishes.

Best tea: The sensational spread served up at Belhus on the last day of the season. We were very lucky this year and enjoyed some superb teas, but this one had the lot.

Best catch: The sensational diving pluck from Graham Tyrrell at Buckhurst Hill off the bowling of Gareth. Technically brilliant and a lesson to anyone who said that big guys can’t dive. It was just a shame that it was not in a closer contest, as this was one of the games where we were thrashed.

Best run out: The slow motion Marcus effort against the Harlow vets.

Best comedy moment: Nick strolling out to field at Eastons wearing that tight pullover.

Biggest hero: Graham Mully for offering to help out with an availability crisis against North Weald and then rescuing a draw with the bat.

Biggest disappointment: Not winning an epic at Edmonton.

Biggest satisfaction: Seeing Mat Freeman and Gareth Cox “having a go” to win the game against Holtwhites Trinibis.

It was a great season, and let’s hope next year is just as good.

Roll on the first ball of 2010 !
