Do not underestimate good fielding

The countdown continues to the first game of the season, and I am sure from our extensive winter net campaign that we have prepared as thoroughly as possible. The bowling and batting have both come to the boil and standards have improved dramatically.

However, one area of our game still remains open to massive improvement. The area in question is of course fielding. Please consider the four points below before taking to the field on the 5th of May.

  • Catching – Nobody drops a catch on purpose, so be confident and do not dwell on mistakes. Get into position as early as possible when you see the ball coming and watch it right into your hands.
  • Backing up – Whenever the ball is being thrown back to either the bowler or the wicket keeper be aware of backing up the ball receiver in case they miss it. This will save numerous runs throughout the season, and ultimately can be the difference between winning and losing.
  • Relay throwing – This has become a feature even in test match cricket now, and it is certainly something for us to be very aware of. The scenario for us to benefit here is when a boundary fielder has to get the ball back a long way to the stumps. Fielders between them and the stumps should be prepared to act as a relay agent to get the ball back as quickly as possible. So effectively we will have two shorter and more accurate throws rather than one less accurate energy sapping longer throw.
  • Stay sharp – Even if the match is not going as well as it could, do not switch off. Matches can swing in an instant and a brilliant catch or a breathtaking run out can change the whole course of events.

But above all, enjoy your fielding as a happy team always play to the best of their potential.
