Vs Woodford Wells Sunday Bs

Mi. Freeman - Regulation day in the field bar one misfield pouched a vital catch. Batted with determination & aggression to establish a good beach head to enable the middle order to mount an assault on the target. Was a victim of the drinks break, the break in concentration coinciding with the best ball bowled by the leg spinner.

Alfieri - Had plenty to do collecting the ball from over the rope on the short sided downhill boundary but none was related to poor fielding. No nonsense with the bat and attacked from the off. Was undone by a surprise full toss from the better opening bowler who removed his middle stump.

Akyuz - Like Tony he had plenty of fetching to do fielding on that boundary. Was barracked by some junior spectators for a valiant attempt at saving 4 but kept his cool. Rusty technique with the bat was exposed by the opening seamer but not unexpected after twenty years without a net.   Maintained a positive attitude throughout despite a quiet day.

A. Underwood - Sound in the field especially when patrolling the boundary, perhaps could have been more committed when presented with a catching half chance. Batted like Thor, Norse God of Thunder, smiting anything of less than top quality to the boundary & beyond.  Importantly kept the ball mostly on the deck to give the minimum of chances to the fielders which paid dividends with his third club century. Bravo!

Sparrey - Faultless as ever in the field, taking a quality skier to secure the first wicket. Took a hammering when given a rare chance to turn his arm over but secured an important brace of scalps to keep new batsmen at the crease.  Looked somewhat out of sorts when batting, perhaps due to the ball not coming on to the bat with any pace off the rain-affected pitch.

G. Cox - Bowled a very controlled & probing spell up the slope securing another scalp in the process. Was brought back for an odd over near the death and kept things together. Another cameo with the bat when perhaps if he could have hung around a little longer he could have really made hay in the run-in.

Downing - Bowled well up the hill using the slope in tandem with the swinging ball to induce doubt in the marauding batsmen, however uncharacteristically dropped a sitter that was heading down Tony’s throat. Batted positively and to his strengths, playing proper shots with a straight bat when others would have been tempted to slog. Notched an enormous straight six from either end, one clearing the clubhouse complex roof!

McHugh - Kept well despite the vagaries of the sloping pitch. Shuffled the bowlers around well as captain in an attempt to make breakthroughs on a relatively docile pitch. Played a vital supporting role to Jim’s charge late on, keeping the strike rotated & picking up runs where available.

Ma. Freeman - Bowled far more erratically than his tight spell of the previous week & never really looked like making a breakthrough but kept things relatively tidy in the circumstances. Was a terrier in the field, pouncing on several run-out chances but failed to convert any. Made a valiant diving effort to take a skier on the run in the last over off Nick.

S. Shewring - Bowled down the slope but was given no chance to settle or find his rhythm by the rampant oppo batsmen and as a result bowled somewhat of a mixed bag. Not really a surprise after such a long layoff from the game with illness. It was great to see him back in action for the Rozzers though!

N. Shewring - Had some issues with his line and length in the initial exchanges but pulled it together to bowl one batsman round his legs. Persisted when taking some severe punishment from the big run scorer but got his just deserts with a top notch caught & bowled that there was never any doubt about. Unhappily for him it was another week where he could have had a 4 or 5-fer if the fielders had shown more commitment or common sense when catching opportunities presented themselves.
